Funneling Artisans into the Market
Making SLO, located at 751 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo, CA is a locally owned & operated artisanal consignment store, offering 70% sale value benefit to the creators whose merchandise it houses.
Inside, you'll find various types of products made by creators local to San Luis Obispo. Among them are:
- cutting/serving boards glazed with resin waves & seafoam,
- apparel adorned with the campy titles of "SLO DUDE" and "SLO BABE,"
- mugs painted in acrylic with renditions of local landmarks (such as The Mission & Fremont Theater),
- laser-engraved leather keychains & stone coasters,
- drinkware etched with local scenery,
- handmade Italian leather wood & leather wallets,
- fun souvenir t-shirts with designs ranging from local mountains to awful (yet endearing) dad jokes,
- hand dyed bamboo socks & ice dyed clothing,
- aerospace engineered EDC items (pens, containers, clips, utility knives),
- thoughtfully designed canvas tote bags,
- unique and awesome Taylor Swift-themed glass frosted tumblers,
- snacks,
- bath & spa gifts,
- hand-made knitted plushies,
- jewelry,
- and even though this list has become quite long--there is still SO MUCH MORE!
April, the owner, also designs concepts, logos, etc which she gives to local artisans to create merchandise with. She pays the artisan to produce the products, and sells them directly to local customers. This exemplifies her desire to facilitate sustainable creativity & entrepreneurship within San Luis Obispo--further underlined by her dream to house equipment which local artisans can use to create new products, which can then be sold through their desired means or helpfully sold in the very location they were made.
If you happen to see April while you're stopping in to find a few of your favorite things, be sure to strike up a conversation with her and learn more about why she cares so much about her work. She is a delight to speak with & listen to.
Scott's pick is the aerospace engineered refillable pen. Made from high-quality materials and somehow without fasteners, it's slick, compact, and writes with a nice weight.
