This is a family-run place that has been making pizza since the 1940s, when it was known as tomato pie. "They use an old bakery roller for the dough. The result is an impossibly thin, an impossibly crunchy crust. It's delicious........
Upon entrance you immediately get the feel you would expect at one of these old school Midwest pizza taverns. You are first greeted by the bar upon entry. The night we went the bar was full with people watching basketball and eating pizza and having a beer. They had Spotted Cow on tap so that's another good sign in my book. Lighting was dim and the dining room was old school. The old wooden chairs at the tables with one of those painted murals of Italy on the wall along with a bunch of old school pictures and articles. Before I even had a sip of water I had fell in love with the place. The menu tells the restaurants history on the back of its menu.
I'm not going to sit here and try and come up with some fancy words to describe this pie. It is amazing. I repeat amazing. First thing you notice is the near blackened crust and the fact it is loaded with sausage unlike any other pizza spot I have ever seen. Upon picking up a piece you realize that the bottom crust is loaded with cornmeal. It may sound unappetizing but the bottom of the pie felt like sandpaper. Trust me when I say it was as appetizing a pizza pie as I have had. Excellent pizza with cornmeal at the bottom, crisp near-cracker like crust with slightly burnt edges, good sauce, good sausage - and lots of it.........
Wells Bros. Family Tradition
In 1921, James and Dominic Wells opened Wells Brothers Restaurant on the corner of 22nd and Mead in Racine, Wisconsin. James operated the restaurant until his death in 1944, then sons Tony and Guy took over until 1999. During that period, the restaurant enjoyed many good times but also weathered some hardships. In 1967, two fires completely destroyed the inside of the restaurant. The brothers rebuilt it to its present appearance. Continuing the tradition of a family owned restaurant, third generation Wells — cousins Bill Rivers and Paula Wells-Huck — now operate the business.
Since 1921, Wells Brothers has been preparing Italian dishes utilizing the same recipes passed down through the generations — all using fresh, high quality ingredients. We have been blessed with numerous awards throughout the years including The Top Pizza in Racine — 1980s, The Top Independent Business in the USA — 1990s, and in 2005, Wells Bros. pizza was voted #6 in the nation! We strive to make your every visit to Wells Brothers a pleasurable and memorable experience. Enjoy your time here with us.
