Language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and technology comprise our challenging curriculum in self-contained classrooms. Teachers use a thematic approach to learning, thus providing students an understanding of the relationship between disciplines. Artistic and musical exploration as well as physical activity are important parts of the curriculum. Computers are used to enhance the teaching of many subjects. Students often visit the wider community on field trips and for service projects.
Middle School Curriculum
Middle School teachers at The Midland Academy build upon the fifth-eighth grade students’ natural curiosity, energy and enthusiasm. The faculty and administrators provide a secure base from which students can enter into the greater autonomy and challenge of Upper School.
The Midland Academy Middle School strives to educate the entire student while developing habits which lead to high achievement. Spanning grades five through eight, our unique curriculum seeks to challenge students.
The curriculum for Middle School is constructed to prepare students for the rigors of the College Board Advanced Placement® program delivered in the Upper School. The rigorous program provides the academic tools and curricular advancement to help students be successful both in Upper School and college.
Upper School Curriculum | | |
While the Upper School program at The Midland Academy is rigorous, students are afforded the opportunity to select the courses in which they most want to challenge themselves. Upper School is comprised of grades 9-12. The curriculum at The Midland Academy is rigorous and advanced to provide students with the skills needed to be well prepared when they embark on their college career. To this end, The Midland Academy provides students with early-college opportunities. These opportunities allow for students to earn college credit while still in high school. The primary method available for students is through the College Board Advanced Placement® (AP) courses. AP classes are college-level classes taught in the high school. Students take demanding exams at the end of the school year to determine if they learned sufficiently to earn college credit. Also, The Midland Academy will pay for students to take classes at local college or universities.
Upper School students are required to meet certain minimum standard requirements. However, Midland Academy graduates usually surpass these in several areas, thereby increasing their chances for acceptance and success at the college of their choice.
