Okay, there are some negatives. Van's IS in an old  strip mall.  But the store is really not dirty.  The aisles are wide and the store is bright. The parking lot is a nightmare, very crowded and tight.  But I really enjoy shopping at Van's despite all that.  The prices are definitely better than the other stores in town (Albertson;s and Safeway) and you don't have to use one of those pesky cards which I really appreciate.  The store-made salsa is excellent, the fruit and vegetables are good, the bakery is terrific, they have an amazing selection of cheeses and the deli is great as well.  I usually shop at Safeway because it is closer, but I will occasionally make the long haul over to Van's and am always glad I did.    Oh-one more thing.  The meat is great, they even carry local meat, and I especially like that they sell small roasts (1.5 lbs) so my husband and I can enjoy a roast beef dinner without excessive leftovers that we might not finish.  And if you bring your own bag they give you a nickel!!!  An actual nickel in your hand (not a credit on your bill).  That always makes me smile!

If you want the best produce and meat in Helena, then Van's is the place to shop.
