The Children's Museum of Spokane began in 1995, with a group of dedicated volunteers who saw an overwhelming need for hands-on early childhood education in Spokane. These dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to bring their vision to reality. The initial location became a strong foundation for what Mobius Kids has become today.
In 1998 the museum moved to a larger facility on Post Street, expanding the hands-on learning opportunities for families in the area. Lead by passionate Executive Directors and a dynamic Board of Directors the museum quickly became and integral part of the Spokane community. In 2003, the Board of Directors embarked on a Capital Campaign to open a new facility.
In January of 2005 the Children's Museum of Spokane and Inland Northwest Science and Technology Center, both local non-profit organizations, merged to form Mobius Spokane. Mobius Spokane is the parent of two separate operating entities; Mobius Kids and Mobius Science Center.
Since opening its doors on September 3, 2005, Mobius Kids has become a mainstay in the community. The museum averages over 65,000 visitors annually, nearly doubling the annual attendance from its previous location on Post Street. Mobius Kids continues to provide fun, hands-on educational opportunities to its visitors and has become a top-tier children's museum in Eastern Washington.
The name Mobius is derived from a Mobius Strip – a loop of material with a single twist that creates a continuous one-sided plane. This symbol represents the endless possibilities, creativity and sustainability that Mobius Kids encourages.
